When John Locke enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father Albert Locke, Ross St, Paddington. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 1 p. 61, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. A. Locke, Ross St, Paddington.

John Locke was born on 30 Oct 1880 in Queensland, a son to Albert Locke and Eliza Bridget Locke (nee Collins). He married Agnes Jane McGill Vogt on 20 Apr 1903 in Queensland and they had 11 children.
