Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Walter Longland enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as D. Longland, Bulimba. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 1 p. 51, it notes his address as Hughenden and postal address care of D. Longland, Rope Works, Woolloongabba. It appears this was his older brother David Longland who worked at the famous rope works where all manner of large ropes were made for the likes of shipping.

Walter Longland was born on 31 May 1877 in Queensland, a son to Jonathan Longland and Mary Longland (nee Stone). He married Lavinia Greenwood on 9 Aug 1911 in Queensland and they had 2 children.
