Add my storyBiography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When William John Lucas enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father J. Lucas, Purga Creek via Ipswich. In the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his N.O.K. is recorded as his father James Lucas, Purga Creek, Ipswich.
William John Lucas was born on 17 Jun 1955 in Queensland, a son to James Lucas and Mary Eliza Lucas (nee Ferguson). He married Euphemia (Teenie) Forsyth on 6 Aug 1902 at Flinders Congregational Church, Peak Crossing, Ipswich, and they had 1 child.
His father James passed in 1920 and was a well known identity at Purga having resided at "Summer Hill" for the previous 56 years. In his obituary published in The Queensland Times, 8 Mar 1920, p. 6, mention is made of his son William:
"His eldest son, Mr. William Lucas, now a resident of the metropolitan area, went to South Africa, in one of the Queensland contingents."
