Studmaster's Death
MR. E. C. C. Luck, who managed Portland Downs station for more than a quarter of a century, died in Brisbane and was buried in Rockhampton yesterday. He was on his way back from N.S. Wales, where he had been visiting his daughter after buying rams for Portland stud at Sydney sales, when he collapsed. The late Mr. Luck, who was 69, served in the Boer War with a younger brother, who was killed in France in 1918. One of the best known pastoral identities in Central Queensland, Mr. Luck managed Avon Downs in North Queensland from 1910 to 1912 and Portland Downs-from 1915 until he retired in 1941. Since then he had lived at Yeppoon.
He was a past president of Longreach Club, Isisford Hospital and Isisford Amateur Race Club; & councillor of Ilfracombe Shire for many years; and was vice-president of the Queensland Merino stud Sheepbreeders' Association at the time of his death. Since his retirement he had represented western shires on the Rockhampton Harbor Board. He is survived by his wife; his son, Edward, who succeeded him as Portland Downs manager; one daughter, Mrs. Ray Bladwell (Goulburn, N.S.W.); five grandchildren; a brother, Mr. C. R. Luck, of Rockhampton; and one sister. Mrs. Dickson, of Sydney.
