Boer War Veteran Wins Car (March 1954)
A 79 year-old Boer war veteran, Mr. W. Luff, of Tumblong, was the winner of the art union conducted by the North Canberra R.S.L., drawn in the Lady Gowrie Services Hut on Saturday night. His prize was a 1954 Peugeot sedan, worth £1,073. Mr. Luff came to Canberra for the Royal Visit, and took part in the ex-Servicemen's parade at Parliament House on February 17.
He was in bed when told by telephone of his win, and was delighted with his good fortune. Arrangements for delivery of the car will be made today.
