John Luscombe was born Alfred Nelson Phister (son of Jacob William Phister and Mary Jane Morrison). He enlisted as John Luscombe in  the Boer War, serving with 3rd NSW Mounted Rifles, D Squadron Remington Scouts, and continued as John Luscombe when he returned to Australia

John married Maud Patience Mignonette Jane Victoria Cavanagh in Sydney, New South Wales on 6 January 1904, and worked in Sydney as a Labourer.

John died on 8 March 1971 in Hawkesbury, New South Wales
