Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Note- while the AWM Boer War Nominal Roll complied by Murray records him as Albert William Mackenzie, his correct name was Albert William McKenzie as recorded in the original 1st Queensland Contingent nominal roll and Boer War Service Paybooks.

When Albert William McKenzie enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private A. W. McKenzie, single, c/- Mr. P. McKenzie, The Valley, Ormsby Junction, Sydney, NSW. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 84, it is noted he directed part of his pay to Mr. E. P. McKenzie (his brother), cnr Queen and George Sts., Brisbane. He was invalided from service returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 8 Sep 1900.

Albert William McKenzie was born in 1878 at Parramatta, Sydney, NSW, a son to Peter McKenzie abd Clara McKenzie (nee Higgins). It appears that the affects of the war may have lingered with him as he passed in 1904 due, as stated in his published death notice, a long and painful illness.

Death NoticeThe Daily Telegraph (Syd), 11 Oct 1904, p. 1.

McKenzie - On the 5th October, 1904, at his parents' residence, "The Valley", Hornsby, Albert William (late tramway employee), third dearly beloved son of Peter and Clara McKenzie, in his 26th year, after a long and painful illness, borne with Christian patience. He went with the first Queensland Contingent to South Africa, and served there with the troops during the late Boer war. Queensland papers please copy.
