When James Maher enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. M. Maher at East Brisbane. On his return in 1902 from South Africa newspaper reports indicate he was part of the welcome home function conducted by the Ipswich Council for 'sons of Ipswich' that served in the South African (Boer) War.
