Edmonstone 'Ted' Markwell was born 27 Dec 1863 in Queensland, Australia, a son to William John Markwell and Georgina Markwell (nee Edmonstone). He married Anna Elizabeth Taylor in Brisbane on 30 Jul 1889 and they had three children.
He was a prominent athlete and cyclist and operated in a Auctioneer and Commission Agent business in Queens St, Brisbane prior to serving in South Africa. After returning home from the war he would return to South Africa to take up a prominent position with the South African Railways Dept, his wife and children remaining in Brisbane. His health deteriorated and he suffered heart failure on 27 Nov 1903 while still in South Africa.
