The AWM Boer War Nominal Roll and original Nominal Roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent show his surname as Marmant, however, the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB and newspaper reports on the 5th QIB show his surname correctly as Marmont.
When John Marmont enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his uncle T. Marmont, Golspie P.O. via Taralga, NSW. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 156, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his uncle Mr. W. M. Marmont, Golspie P.O. via Taralga, NSW.
John Marmont was born on 13 Mar 1864 at Taralga, NSW, a son to John Marmont and Margaret Marmont (nee Francis). He married Bridget Toole on 21 May 1906 at Goulburn, NSW, and they had 8 children. In his early years, prior to enlisting for the war, he worked as a periodical shearer and miner through Queensland and NSW. He returned to the Taralga district after his war service where he conducted the Royal Hotel for some years and commenced his family. He later acquired a farm in the Richlands district which he worked until he retired.
During his war service he was involved in some noteworthy incidents. On 16 Jun 1901 he was involved in a battle where his actions, along with a Corp. F. C. V. King, earned him a decoration in the form of a Mention in Despatches by the Commander in Chief. The mention was published in the London Gazette, 20 Aug 1901, p. 5497 with a citation relating to the actions of both men reading- Came from good cover and carried a wounded comrade to dressing station, 700 yards under fire. June 16th 1901.
On 15 Jul 1901 he was involved in action at Wonderfontein where he was captured by the enemy and later released. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, it notes under his entry that he was Fined £1.6.2 being half the cost of rifle and bandolier taken from Private Marmont when captured.
