Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When John Edward McCabe enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father Patrick McCabe, Barcaldine.

John McCabe, known as John Edward McCabe, was born on 10 Dec 1872, a son to Patrick McCabe and Sarah McCabe (nee Brady).John died from concussion of the brain, the result of a fight on New Years day 1912 at Barcaldine passing away the next day. The other party in the fight was alledged to have attacked John and was sent to trial for murder, the outcome of which is unknown.

John's father, Patrick, was born in Ireland and arrived in Brisbane in 1864, married in 1866, and made his way to Springsure where he lived for 25 years during which their 13 children were born. It is therefore assumed that his son John was born at Springsure or in the district.

After running a successful boarding house in Springsure, Patrick moved the family in 1891 to Barcaldine where he purchased the Springsure Hotel. This business was less successful leading him to semi-retire taking on part time work around the town including caretaking at the cemetery. His son John worked as a labourer and station hand in the Barcaldine area prior to and after his Boer war service.
