Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Full name was William Thomas McCabe and he was born in New South Wales.

When William McCabe enlisted in 1901 and was entered in the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his N.O.K. was recorded as his father, 123 Glebe St, Glebe, Sydney.

He was seriously wounded suffering a gunshot wound to the head on 17 Jun 1901. After spending several months in hospital he was invalided back to Australia aboard Manchester Merchant and discharged at Brisbane on 10 Feb 1902. He was still suffering ill effects when he returned to Sydney from Brisbane as reported in the Personal column of The Brisbane Courier as transcribed below:

Personal: Return of Private Wm. McCabeThe Brisbane Courier, 20 Jun 1903, p. 5, parag. 12.

Private Wm. McCabe, of the Fifth Contingent, has just returned to Sydney from Brisbane. This soldier was dangerously wounded at Goedgeoven in the war in South Africa, by being shot through the head, and though he has spent fifteen months in hospital, he has not yet fully recovered. The Patriotic Fund made him the maximum grant, which will be paid at the rate of £5 per month, and McCabe will also draw a pension from the Imperial authorities.

It appears his condition did not improve with his passing on 4 Jun 1904 at Sydney as noted in an In Memoriam notice placed by his parents in The Evening News (Sydney) as transcribed below:

In Memoriam: McCabe- The Evening News (Sydney), 4 Jun 1906, p. 4.

McCabe- A tribute of unfading love to the memory of our dear son and brother, William McCabe, who died from wounds recieved in South Africa June 4, 1904. Inserted by his loving father and mother. Sadly missed.

The BDM NSW online death register shows only one entry for a William McCabe in June, and the whole year, of 1904- William Thomas McCabe.

William McCabe was born in 1870 at Bathurst, NSW, a son to Patrick and Ellen McCabe.
