Hugh James McCarry was born on 20 Jan 1882 at Coonabarabran, New South Wales, a son to Hugh McCarry and Susan Ellen McCarry (nee Irwin). He married Ellen Margaret O'Brien on 14 Feb 1904 at Amby, Queensland, and they had 9 children.
