Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Andrew John McDonald enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father, John St, Valley, Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 3 p. 128, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. S. McDonald, John St, Valley.

Andrew John McDonald was born on 21 Dec 1881 at Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, a son to Andrew McDonald and Sarah McDonald (nee Lewis). He was twice married. He married Annie Christina Troedson on 24 Jan 1912 at Trinity Church, Valley, and they had 1 child before Annie passed in 1916. He then married Nellie Scott on 25 Oct 1919 in Queensland and they had 1 child.

His passing in May 1934 was reported in Brisbane newspapers. At the time he was a partner in the firm Atkinson and McDonald Timber Merchants in Stanley St, South Brisbane and he was living at Evelyn St, Newstead. On Saturday 5 May 1934 he had been working at the timber yard before attending the Morrison Hotel across the road. When he left in the evening he went to retrieve his coat from his office and after sitting in his chair there, he suddenly passed.
