When Joseph McDonald enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private J. McDonald, married, Crown Road, One-mile, Gympie. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 83, it is noted he directed part of hos pay to his wife Mrs. J. McDonald, Nelson Lane, One-mile, Gympie.
He contracted Enteric Fever and was invalided from service returning to Brisbane, aboard the Persic, where he was discharged on 25 Aug 1900.
