Alexander McDougall was born on 11 Nov 1874 at Houston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, a son to Duncan McDougall and Jane McDougall (nee Ramsay). 

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 312 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 1337 in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment AIF WW1.
