When Thomas McElwaine enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother, Warwick Rd, Ipswich. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 107, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. M. McElwaine, Warwick St, Ipswich.

Thomas McElwaine was born on 11 Dec 1873 in Queensland, a son to James McElwaine and Mary McElwaine (nee Fox). He married Margaret Ann Wade on 20 Jan 1904 in Queensland and they had 6 children while living at Warwick Rd, Ipswich.
