Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When Donald McLeod enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. B. McLeod, Fitzroy St, Warwick.

Donald McLeod was born on 26 Nov 1869 in Queensland, a son to Angus McLeod and Bridget McLeod (nee Carroll). It appears he suffered ill health after his return from the war and passed in Aug 1904 at Warwick. His obituary was published in The Warwick Examiner, 13 Aug 1904, p. 7 and is transcribed below.

As a side note a fellow soldier in the 5th QIB, Priv. George William Brown S.N. 383, also gave Donald's mother as his N.O.K., however, the original nominal roll didn't record any kin relationship with her so it is assumed Donald and George were friends.

Obituary- Donald McLeod, The Warwick Examiner, 13 Aug 1904, p. 7.

Mr. Donald McLeod, eldest son of Mrs. McLeod, of Fitzroy-street, died on Thursday afternoon. Deceased had been ailing for some time, and there was no hope from the start of his recovery. The late Mr. McLeod served in one of the Bushmen's Contingents in South Africa.
