Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Henry Archibald Mears served twice in the South African (Boer) War. Newspaper reports indicate he was from the Rockhampton area when he first enlisted in 1901.

When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his brother W. Mears, Longreach. He was invalided from that service returning to Brisbane where he was discharged 11 Apr 1902. Almost immediatly he enlisted again on 1 May 1902 to join the 7th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse. When his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 31 May 1902, he noted his N.O.K. as W. Mears, Barcaldine.
