Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Lionel Offley Micklem was born on 5 Apr 1873 at St. George Hanover Square, London, England, a son to Leonard Micklem and Dora Emily Micklem (nee Weguelin). Its unclear when he first came to Australia but he appears in newspaper shipping arrival reports in and out of Brisbane in 1898.

He served with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen in the South African (Boer) War between Jun 1900 and Jul 1901. It appears that following his service he returned to England where he married Gytha Constance Bevan on 20 Oct 1903 at Kensington, London and they had two children born 1904 and 1908.

Its unclear when they returned to Australia but newspaper reports have them visiting in 1904 and returning to their cattle station in 1906. In 1927 he applied to the Land Court in North Queensland for renewal of a pastoral lease on a property (believed to be Valley of the Lagoons station) in the Gunnawarra area near Mount Garnet in far north Queensland. it appears he was the leaseholder from 1903 to 1929. They appeared to spend time between England and Australia with a final move back to England after sale of the cattle station in 1929.
