When Joseph Alfred Miles enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB he note his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. J. Miles, Bookham, NSW. Boer War Service Paybooks for 6th QIB, p. 148, held by Qld State Archives notes he was discharged in South Africa on 16 May 1902 prior to the remainder of the 6th embarking on 17 May 1902 to return to Australia.
