Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Also served in WW1, Private S.N. 633, 2nd Light Horse Regiment AIF.

When Daniel Moloney enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. Moloney, South Brisbane. When he enlisted again for WW1 on 17 Sep 1914 he noted on his Attestation Form that; he was 36 years 9 months of age (b. 1873 approx) and single; he was born in Queensland, his N.O.K. was his sister Miss Annie Moloney, South Brisbane; and he previously served in the 5th QIB Boer War.

Newspaper reports in May 1902 note he remained in South Africa in hospital when the remainder of the 5th QIB returned to Australia. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 65, it notes he was discharged in South Africa on 26 Mar 1902. It appears he was discharged there to allow him to take up employment. He notes on his WW1 Attestation Form, under previous service, that after his 5th QIB service he served 6 years in the Cape Mounted Police and 3 years in the District Mounted Police (Cape Town).

By 1914 he was back in Queensland where he was living in Brisbane and working as a Surveyor's Chainman when he enlisted for WW1.
