When James Mooney enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as F. Mooney, Chinchilla. In the original Nominal Roll for the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his N.O.K. is recorded as his brother.
He enlisted at Cloncurry in 1916 for WW1 and in his Attestation Form, dated 9 Apr 1916, it is noted; he was born at Dubbo, NSW, and was 38 years 8 months of age; he was single and working as a labourer; his N.O.K. was his niece Miss Maggie Hassett, Morven, Qld; and he had previously served in South Africa.
James Mooney was born in 1877 at Dubbo, NSW, a son to James Joseph Mooney and Nora (Norah/Honora) Mooney (nee Lyons).
