Tom was the third of six children of John Taylor (born 1865 in Scotland) and first wife Sarah Boyle (born 1868 in Dalby, QLD). John and Mary married in QLD in 1885 and lived and worked in the Longreach region of QLD before settling in Dalby, QLD. John worked as Stock Inspector and was in Brisbane, QLD in 1915 when Tom enlisted in the Army.

Tom was living in Dalby, QLD in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF - his Attestation Papers state he was a 'Drover' and family records and his Marriage Certificate list him as a 'Draper'. Tom (Private, Service No:3659) served with 8th Reinforcements 25th Infantry Battalion and 31st Infantry Battalion. Tom's brothers Andrew (Service No:21426) and John (Service No:2889) also served in WWI. 

In March 1919, Tom married Edwina (Winnie) Georgina Kerr (born 1897 in Glasgow, Scotland) in Glasgow, Scotland. Tom returned to Brisbane, QLD in July 1919 and Winnie arrived in September that year.

Tom returned to Roma following his Discharge, and worked as a Draper. Tom and Winnie lived in Brisbane, QLD where Tom was a Company Manager before Winnie returned to Scotland in January 1922. Their Divorce was finalised in May 1933 and in October Tom married Teresa Hurley (nee Farrell, born 1889 in Brisbane, QLD). Tom and Teresa settled in Brisbane, where Tom was a Salesman until his death in 1956. Teresa died in 1974.
