Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Note- South African records (death and burial) have his middle name recorded as Gascoine and Gascoigne. His younger brother Alexander Munro, S.N. 143 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, also served in the South African (Boer) War.

When Thomas Gascoyne Munro enlisted 1899 in the 2nd QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 20 Jan 1900, he noted his N.O.K. as A. Munro, Oriel Rd, Albion. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 2nd QMI, Bk 1 p. 95, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. A. Munro, Albion Park, Albion. He served the full tour of the 2nd QMI returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 17 May 1901.

Thomas Gascoyne Munro was born in 1878 in the district of Kelvin, Glasgow, Scotland, a son to Alexander Munro Snr. and Jane Duncan Munro (nee Mackie). He emigrated with his parents and siblings to Australia in 1899 settling in Brisbane where his father followed his trade as a bootmaker developing an extensive business.

Prior to enlisting for the Boer war he had been living and working in the Roma district. In 1902, a short time after his return from the war and discharge, he returned to South Africa aboard S.S. Runic to take up a position with the police force at Johannesburg. As recorded on his death notice he had reached the rank of detective by the time he passed on 8 Sep 1903 at the Johannesburg Hospital due to pneumonia.

His death notice records his place of birth as Fort George, Inverness, Scotland and his parents as Alexander Munro, Oriel Rd, Albion, Brisbane, Australia (mother unknown). The cemetery register for burials for Braamfontein Cemetery, Johannesburg, records that he was interred there on 9 Sep 1903.
