Served in the New South Wales Contingent to the Sudan in 1885, Regimental Number 219. Awarded Egypt Medal with Suakin Bar, Khedive's Star and Sydney Lord Mayor's Medalette.

Also served in the Boer War in the New South Wales Citizens' Bushmen, A Sqn. Regimental Number 78, attained Rank of SGT. Awarded Queens South Africa Medal with South Africa 01 (SA01) Bar.
