Served twice in the South African (Boer) war. First service was as a Private S.N. 255, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry. Second service was as a Private S.N. 410, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
When he enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were recorded on the original nominal roll for the 1st Queensland Contingent, held by National Archives, his address was recorded as Gatton. When he was returned invalided from South Africa it was reported in The Queensland Times, 18 Sep 1900, that he was from Pittsworth.
When he enlisted again in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as E. Neale, Pittsworth. In the original nominal roll of the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, his N.O.K. is recorded as his father E. Neale, Pittsworth. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 2 p. 187, it is noted he was discharged in South Africa on 11 May 1902, its assumed to allow him to take up employment there.
Ernest William Neale was born on 18 Nov 1877 at Pittsworth, Queensland, a son to Ephriam Neale and Elizabeth Neale (nee Otlif). When his father Ephriam passed in 1927 at Pittsworth his obituary was published in the Pittsworth Sentinel, 2 Mar 1927. It noted Ephriam, originally from England, was one of the oldest residents and pioneers of the district. It noted he left 7 sons and 3 daughters, including Mr. E. (Ernest) Neale in South Africa.
