Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When John Thomas Neary enlisted in 1901 in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his brother W. (William) Neary, Thorn St, Ipswich.

John Thomas Neary was born on 7 Aug 1875 at Harrisville, Queensland, a son to Stephen Neary and Emma Neary (nee Gurney). At the time of his enlistment his father had passed and his mother had remarried in 1897.

When John passed in 1928 an obituary was published in The Queensland Times, 5 Apr 1928, which noted he was born at Harrisville but had resided in Ipswich for the past 40 years. It noted he had served in South Africa and for the past 26 years had lived and worked at the Ipswich Nursey which was owned by his brother-in-law Mr. W. Marsh.
