Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When George Neville enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published (under the name George Atherstone Neville) with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, there was no N.O.K. noted with the address of Wellington Street, Petrie Terrace, Brisbane.

Newspaper report in The Brisbane Courier, 16 May 1902, indicates he was discharged in South Africa on 20 March 1902 for employment there. However, the Boer War Service Paybooks 5th QIB, Bk 2, p. 36 notes he returned to Australia with a small number from the 5th QIB aboard Columbia arriving Brisbane 15 May 1902 with discharge back dated to 5 May 1902 (same date as the disbandment of the 5th QIB).

This is supported by report in The Queenslander, 24 May 1902, suggesting earlier report should have listed him as remaining in South Africa for further service. The Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB indicate that any balance due was to be paid to him in South Africa. It is noted in determining amounts due that gratuity was revised due to gratuity payment with 1st Contingent suggesting he served previously (perhaps S.N. 58 Private George Neville, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, Murray p. 454).
