When Ernest William Norman enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs E. Norman, Malvern, Melbourne. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 25, it notes he directed part of his pay to his brother Mr A. Norman, Melbourne.

He also enlisted in  November 1915 at Liverpool, NSW, for WW1, Private S.N. 2225, 7th Light Horse Regiment AIF. In his enlistment Attestation Paper he noted he was single; aged 40; his N.O.K was his mother Mrs. Emma Norman, East Malvern, Mebourne; he worked as a gardener; and that he had previously served in the South African (Boer) War in the 5th QIB.
