Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Walter Richard Nowland was born in 1872, son of William Nowland and Pauline Nowland (nee Underwood), at Caletoota near Muswellbrook NSW. Newspaper reports have him in Longreach Qld when he answered the call in 1900 to join up for the Boer War.

Following his return from the war he returned to settle in Muswellbrook where he was appointed Temporary C;erk of the Municipality of Muswellbrook on 21 Jun 1906. On 20 Feb 1907 he was appointed the full time Shire Clerk and served in the position 1949. National Archives Australia records show that he enlisted on 29 Aug 1918 for service in WW1, however, he was discharged on 2 Sep 1918 for 'having irregulary enlisted (being ove military age)'before he embarked.
