Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

John 'Jack' O'Brien was born 5 Apr 1875 at Cathcart, New South Wales. He served for the full tour as a Private S.N. 256 with 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. His place and date of birth, and occupation of Stockman, are contained in his Boer War Dossier for this service held by the National Archives Australia.

Another Boer War Dossier held by National Archives indicates that he enlisted at Sydney in 1902 for a second time to serve with the NSW Commonwealth Contingent (S.N. 287), however, it is unclear whether he embarked as he does not appear on the Nominal Rolls for NSW. Again he gave his occupation as Stockman, that he previously served with the Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and he was residing at Glebe, NSW, when he enlisted.
