Jack was the eldest of seven children of William O'Mara (b1842 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Margaret Lucy Donnelly (b1852 in County Louth, Ireland). William (a Carrier) and Margaret married in Melbourne, Victoria in 1874 and by the late 1890s had moved with their family to Perth WA.
Jack was Horse Trainer in Perth, WA in 1898 when he enlisted with the 4th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse D Coy (Service No:2830; Farrier Sergeant) in the Boer War. He was Discharged in Iuly 1902.
In 1904 Jack married Lucy (Bub) Beatrice Mary Towton (b1883 in Perth WA) - Bub was the daughter of well known WA Horse Breeder, Owner and Jockey George Towton who had stables at Belmont in Perth, WA. Jack and Bub settled in Belmont, Perth WA where Jack was a Horse Trainer. Four of their children - John, Matt, Ethel and Bill - served in WWII.
Jack died in 1945 and Bub in 1961.
