When Thomas Paton enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father J. Paton, Stanthorpe, Queensland.

Thomas Paton was born on 8 Nov 1879 at Perth, Scotland, a son to John Paton and Ann Paton (nee Ford). He came to Queensland with his parents at the age of four and the family settled in Stanthorpe. He married Mary Reppel of Allora on 12 Aug 1931. After returning from the war he settled in Stanthorpe where he farmed fruit and later he and his wife resided in Allora where he was a seed grader.
