Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Also served in WW1, S.N. 192 Corporal George Marcus Peut, 2nd Light Horse Regiment AIF.

Surname incorrectly recorded as Pent on the Boer War Nominal Roll collated by Murray. He was correctly recorded as Peut in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB from 1901-02 held by Qld State Archives. His full name being George Marcus Peut.

When he enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details (under Peut) were published in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother Mrs. Peut, Stanley St, South Brisbane. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, Bk 2 p. 111, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. I. Peut, South Brisbane.

When he enlisted in 1914 for WW1  he noted on his Attestation Form dated 20 Aug 1914 that; he was born at South Brisbane and was 30 years 9 months old; he was a motor mechanic; he was married and living at South Brisbane with N.O.K. his wife Mrs Vera M. Peut; and he had previously served in South Africa in the 5th QIB.

George Marcus Peut was born on 8 Nov 1883 at South Brisbane, a son to Nicholas Frederick Peut and Isabella Peut (nee Low). He married Vera Muriel Miller on 4 Jul 1906 at the Brisbane City Tabernacle and they resided in South Brisbane.

Though he qualified as a motor mechanic prior to serving in WW1 he would later join the fire brigade, a career path following that of his father. He rose through the ranks and was appoint 3rd officer of The Metropolitan Fire Brigade. A number of newspaper articles recording his passing in 1926 noted his services in the Boer War and WW1 and his career in the fire brigade.

Death: Mr G. M. Peut

The death took place on June 4 at Rosemount Hospital, of Mr. George Marcus Peut, third officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The deceased had been connected with the fire brigade since infancy, his father having been superintendent of the South Brisbane brigade for many years. Mr. Peut saw service in the South African war, and later the Great War. It was in the latter war that he contracted malaria, from which he suffered ever since his return, and which eventually caused his death. In January last, deceased, who was district officer in charge of the South Brisbane Fire Brigade, was promoted to third officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The late Mr. Peut's wife died shortly after his return from the Great War. He is survived by his mother, brother, and two sisters. ...extracted from article in The Week (Brisb), 11 Jun 1926, p. 12.
