Death of Barney Phillips
A BOER WAR VETERAN
Following a prolonged period of ill-health, the death occurred at the Victoria District Hospital at Geraldton this morning of a well-known identity of the town in the person of Mr. Arnold Curnow ("Barney") Phillips at the age of seventy-six years. The deceased gentleman was only admitted to hospital on Friday last, but he had been in a weak state of health for some years past. The late Mr. Phillips was born at Rocklyn (Victoria) and came to this State shortly after the termination of the Boer War in
which he served in South Africa He rode a bicycle from Kalgoorlie to Wiluna early in the present century and was engaged in mining activities at the latter centre for some time before returning a the grocery trade, in which he was engaged in Victoria. For
many years he resided at Youanmi and later came to Geraldton and joined the staff of Oswell's Stores. He remained in the employ of that business establishment for a very lengthy period and eventually retired from active life on account of ill health and declining years. With the formation of the R.S.L. towards the conclusion of World War I he became a very active member of the Geraldton Sub-Branch and for many years he was a member of the committee of that organisation. After retirement the deceased gentleman, in company with his wife, left Geraldton and resided for about four years with a son at Kojonup and about two years ago he returned to Geraldton to live with a sonlaw and daughter (Mr. and Mirs R. Crabbe) in Gregory Street. Whilst residing in Geraldton the late Mr. Phillips evinced a keen interest in football and horse-racing and in the early days of his manhood he played football and cricket. He was als an accomplished horseman, an excellent rifle shot and an ardent bird fancier.
The late Mr. Phiillips is survived by a widow and six sons and six daughters, and also no fewer than twenty-five grandchildren. Of his own family four sons and three daughters served in World War II.
