Colin John Campbell Philp served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First as a Lieutenant with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and second as a Lieutenant with the 2nd Draft of the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
He was born on 17 Aug 1880 (his twin brother was stillborn) at Townsville, a son to Robert Philp and Jessie Banister Philp (nee Campbell). His father, Robert Philp, was of Scottish ancestory arriving in Australia as a boy with his family. Robert would go on to be a prominent businessman in Townsville and North Qld, becoming a partner with Sir James Burns in the company of Burns Philp & Co. Ltd. establishing the North Queensland Insurance Co. Ltd. and Bank of North Queensland. After leaving the company Robert Philp entered politics becoming the 15th Premier of Queensland 1809-1903 and again 1907-1908 and was appointed a K.C.M.G (Sir Robert Philp) in 1915.
On his return from the Boer War, Colin Philp entered into pastoral interests in North Queensland purchasing Riversleigh Station (cattle) on the Gregory River near Croydon in the Burketown District. He married Katharine Mary Collins on 25 Apr 1906 at Toowong, Brisbane. Katharine was the daughter of Robert Martin Collins from Tamrookum, a pastorlist in the Beaudesert area. Collin and Katharine would go on to have 4 children and also engage in pastoralist interests in the Boonah area owning Wyambyu Station at Boonah.
