Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

William Ponting was born on 1 Mar 1880 at Maryborough, Queensland, a son to Henry Ponting and Alice Ponting (nee Freshney).

Newspaper reports indicate that he was discharged from the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen in South Africa to take up employmnt prior to the unit returning to Australia. He later made his way back to Australia and resided in North Queensland for many years. He returned to Tiaro, about 10 years prior to his passing, where he conducted dairy farming.
