George Harvey Provan was born on 17 Aug 1870 in Queensland, a son to William Provan and Anne Provan (nee Harvey). He married Florence May Pike on 31 Dec 1906 in Sydney returning to live in Queensland where they had 4 children. 

When he returned from the South African (Boer) War he took up a position as manager at the American Boot Company in Brisbane. Sometime around 1915 he relocated his family to the Goondiwindi district where he managed Boogumbilla Station for many years.
