Thomas then served at Heliopolis, Serapeum, Port Said and Moascar throughout 1916 and 1917. He was hospitalised at Ismailia and Abbassia in Egypt in late May and early June 1917 with psoriasis and returned to duty at Moascar on 20 June. Thomas dislocated his right shoulder on 19 July, an injury that plagued him and led to the Medical Board of the 14th Australian General Hospital deciding on 5 September to send him home. Thomas boarded the Wiltshire for the journey back to Australia on 12 November and was discharged as medically unfit on 3 January 1918. His wife Adelaide was granted a pension of one pound 5 shillings and 9 pence per fortnight from 4 January 1918.
