Captain David Elder Reid, Q.M.I., second in command of the Ist Battalion. Queensland Mounted Infantry, left Queensland with the rank of lieutenant in the First Contingent. Was  division leader in A Company at the engagement at Sunnyside, and, with Captain Dowse, shared the honours of being first in the Boer laager. Was in the relief of Douglas. Took  part in the march to the relief of Kimberley, and at Reit River took over command of the company in place of Major Chauvel, who was appointed adjutant. Was in the engagements at the Modder, and at Macfarlane on the day after the relief of Kimberley. Commanded the Queenslanders who went with Major-General Alderson to Paardeberg and Koodoe's  Rand, and was engaged almost every day while there, until Cronje's surrender. Commanded the First Contingent, Queenslanders, at Osfontein and Driefontein, and was in the  entry to Bloemfontein. Took part in the engagement at the Waterworks on the day succeeding the disaster at Sanna's Post. Was in the advance to Kroonstadt and Johannesburg,  including the engagements at Constantia, Zand River. Vet River. Kliprivers berg (two days), Doornkop, and Klipfontein. Took part in the advance on Pretoria and the battle of  Diamond Hill (two days). Was In the engagements at Tygerpoort and Wit-poort, and in the march to Balmoral. Took part in the march to Rustenburg to relieve Major-General  Baden-Powell (including the engagement at Horn's Nek), and in the pursuit of De Wet to Warm Baq. Was in the operations east of Pretoria in the Middleburg district. Captain Reid was offered, but for private reasons declined, the command of the Fifth Queensland Contingent for South Africa.

David Elder Reid was born in Scotland in 1864, a son of William Reid and Christine Reid (nee Beveridge). He studied chemistry at Glasgow University migrating to Qld in 1885. He found work in the Gympie, Qld area as a mine manager at a number of gold mines. 

After serving in the Boer War he returned to Gympie where he was elected Mayor of Gympie in 1903 and married Ann Jannett Murray.
