 Member of South Australian Parliament, served as a captain in 2nd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.

Won the Federal seat of Adelaide for the Labor Party in 1908 and retained it in 1910 and 1913. Suffered Heart attack 2 December 1913, collapsed and died in Parliament.

During his parliamentary career he was an honorary Minister from 1911 to 1913.
