James Alexander Robins was born about 1876 in Sydney, New South Wales, a son to James Robbins and Mary Robins (nee Larkin). He had a tough start in life with his mother passing away in 1885 and his father absent he spent time in an asylum for destitute children in Sydney. By 1900 he was in Queensland when he enlisted for the South African (Boer) War. He married Marguerite White on 11 May 1907 at Rockhampton and they had 4 children.

He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 267 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Secon service was as a Corporal S.N. 362 in the 7th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse.
