Initially rejected by the 1st A.I.F. due to having poor teeth, Albert left Australia on board the Translvania to join the British Expeditionary Force in Alexandria on 29 March 1916. He was sent to France with the 10th Battalion on 4 April. Albert was hospitalised with debility on 14 July. He proceeded from Etaples in France to England on 28 December stationed at No. 2 Commonwealth Depot, Weymouth from 14 February 1917. Shortly afterwards Albert was diagnosed suffering from chronic rheumatism and on 4 May he left Devonport, England for Australia on H.T. Themistocles and was discharged as medically unfit on 8 August.
