Reginald Roy Mackenzie Ross was born on 20 Jun 1871 at Taroom, Queensland, a son to John Hay Mackenzie Ross and Elvina Adelaide Ross (nee Kable).

He served twice in the South African (Boer) War. First service was as a Private S.N. 257 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Second service was as a Private S.N. 1861 in the 3rd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse. He died accidentally drowning while attempting to cross the river at Jellinbah in Central Queensland in 1906.
