Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey
When Henry Rudd enlisted in 1901, he was part of a draft of men established to follow, and embarked some four days after, the main 5th QIB contingent to South Africa. The men in the draft were not included in the original nominal roll for the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen Contingent, held by National Archives, but are included in the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB held by Qld State Archives.
His photograph and details were published with the rank and file of the 5th QIB in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, where he nominated his N.O.K. as c/- M. Coleman, number 497, Fifth Contingent. Michael Coleman at the time of enlistment was living at Laidley where his parents, who had emigrated from England many years prior, had settled.
His funeral notice appearing in The Courier Mail, 24 Jul 1944, reports that he was also an 1880 Veteran indicating he had probably also served with British forces in the First Boer War 1880-1881.
Funeral Notice - The Courier Mail, 24 Jul 1944, p. 6.
