Arthur Albert Ryan served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Private S.N. 134 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry and second as a Sergeant S.N. 1931 in the 3rd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse. (sources AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 470 and 527; National Archives Australia Boer War Dossier S.N. 1931).
