Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

When William Henry Savage enlisted in 1901 in the 6th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 13 Apr 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as Sergeant-Major Savage, Toowong. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 6th QIB, Bk 1 p. 49, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his father Mr M. Savage, Rifle Range Toowong.

His father was Hon. Lieutenant Michael Henry Savage who had a long career with Imperial and Colonial forces. Most notably he served as Staff Signaller under Field Marshall Lord Roberts VC (then General Sir Frederick Roberts) during the Afghan War of 1877-80. After serving with the permanent staff of the Qld Defence Forces, his father was appointed Superintendent of the old Toowong Rifle Range.

William Henry Savage was born about 1882, a son to Michael Henry Savage and Ellen Savage (nee Full). He was living at Ipswich when married Sarah Knight of Toowong on 17 Dec 1913 at the Toowong Methodist Church. They had 1 child and were living at Toowong when he passed in 1952.
