Note- various records show an interchange between the surnames Saville and Savill for William and his siblings that also served in the South African (Boer) War.
When William Walter Saville enlisted in 1899 with the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Sergeant-saddler W. W. Saville, c/- T. A. Clarke, saddler, Gympie. He had trained as a saddler in his native New South Wales.
Three of his siblings also served in the Boer War; S.N. 220 Frederick Herbert Savill, 5th QIB; S.N. 223 George Daniel Savill, 5th QIB; and S.N. 734 Alfred Edward Saville, NSW Lancers. William served the full tour of the 1st QMI returning to Brisbane aboard the Orient where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901.
In an article in The Brisbane Courier, 19 May 1902, p. 5, under the title of Personal, it was reported that his was one two families in Lismore to send 4 to 5 sons to the Boer War. It notes the other brothers as Fred, George and Alfred (who remained in South Africa).
William Walter Saville (BDM NSW register shows Savill) was born on 9 Sep 1868 at Goonellabah, Lismore, NSW, a son to William Savill and Mary Ann Savill (nee French). He married Alice Child in 1909 at Lismore, NSW. When he passed in 1921 an obituary published in newspapers noted he continued with his trade of saddlery in the Lismore area after returning from the war and on his passing leaves a widow but no family.
