QUEENSLAND BOER
WAR VETERAN DIES
Mr Charles John Scott, a retired locomotive driver, of the Queensland Railways, who is being buried today at Toowong, was a native of Brisbane. He was 69 years old. The late Mr Scott served in the South African War in a Queensland contingent and was an active member of the South African War Veterans' Association and South Brisbane Court of Hope, Ancient Order of Foresters.

When Charles John Scott enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Bugler C. Scott, single, Cairns Terrace, Red Hill. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 2 p. 137, it is noted he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. M. Scott, Cairns Terrace, Red Hill, Brisbane.
He served the full tour of the 1st QMI and returned to Brisbane where he was discharged on 23 Jan 1901.
Charles John Scott was born on 17 Jun 1878 at Brisbane, a son to Charles Scott and Mary Scott (nee Bergin). It appears that he had spent some time living in the Roma district prior to enlisting for the Boer War.
He was twice married. He first married Elizabeth Helena Mary Wright on 5 Sep 1906 at Christ Church, Milton Brisbane. They were both residing in Paddington and after they married resided at Latrobe Terrace, Paddington. Elizabeth passed in Dec 1924 and her funeral notice noted she was a beloved wife and mother so it is assumed they had children.
Charles then married for a second time to Effie Smith on 22 Jul 1925 in Queensland and they went on to have one child. It appears that Charles resided in Brisbane for most of his life where he worked as a Locomotive Driver with Queensland Railways.
